Ephemeral Prints [2024]

An active collaboration with Tradescantia fluminensis plant species to create temporary drawings. Ongoing from 2024 – Present

Delving on the idea of other-living organism agency in relation with art creation, this artwork seeks to establish a collaborative relationship with the Invasive Alien Species (in Spanish territories) Tradescantia fluminensis. Taking advantage of its fast growing and spreading capabilities, this co-performance seeks to visualize plant’s self motion and how from its proper exchange of CO2 and O2 it is creating art.

The piece consist in a transparent plastic container of 112 x 80 x 30 cm that works as a terrarium, creating a closed ecosystem where the plant grows and expand.

The artwork Ephemeral Drawings is an ongoing exploration of plant-drawing through the interplay of natural phenomena within a confined space. This piece is deeply rooted in the biological processes that govern plant growth, including photosynthesis, respiration, and transpiration. These life-sustaining functions create a unique microclimate inside the plastic container, where the transpiration of the plant releases water vapor. This vapor accumulates, leading to condensation on the container’s walls, forming a dynamic layer of water droplets. As the plant grows and its leaves come into contact with the walls, they begin to interact with this condensed moisture, leaving behind transient, organic traces by displacing the droplets. These ephemeral marks are both fragile and evocative, embodying the plant’s living essence and its relationship with the environment.

In this context, the artist assumes the role of a facilitator, setting the conditions for these natural events to unfold. It is the plant itself that becomes the true creator, producing drawings that emerge from its biological rhythms and physical presence. The result is a poetic interplay between nature, process, and form, where the artwork becomes a collaboration between human intention and the innate creativity of living systems.
