[Incident light] Embossed pottery installation
The piece Luz incisa arises from a reflection on the role of the machine in the act of creation. It systematically parametrizes the process of vectorizing a scanned leaf to simplify and study the lines generated through its transformation via laser engraving. Using 4 mm pine plywood matrices, laser-engraved with abstractions of internal plant leaf patterns, the piece is printed onto white leather-hard clay (unfired clay with some stiffness) using an etching press.
This process mirrors the image onto the ceramic surface, creating a raised emboss of the organic, digitized motifs. Through this work, the essence of engraving is evidenced as an exchange of information between surfaces, made possible through contact. The matrix transfers to a support (clay), which later transitions from support to matrix, capable of being re-transferred. The duality of paper and matrix is extended to explore new associations within graphic arts, specifically within expanded fields where boundaries blur and collide constantly.
