Espacios liminales de la gráfica contemporánea

[The book in white: Liminal spaces of contemporary graphics]

This project borns as a collective research of the dx5 digital and graphic art group of the University of Vigo. Specialized in expanded contemporary graphic languages and practices, the group proposed a double-action project: an collective artist book and a group exhibition. With white color as a main cohesion line (possibility, empty-full, contrast, origin) the project delves on the essential elements of graphic art to decode its interconnectivity and interrelation structures. By establishing an open basis of graphic art, we propose the hypothesis of its liminal areas and frontiers as a dissolution space where disciplines intertwine together.

Embeded on the idea of interconnectivity, the Book in white presents a selection of nets created by Antía Iglesias on Obsidian software. The main function of this nets is to make evident how different notions and manifestations can be related in between if we look closer. This takes us to the understanding of graphic art as a ecosystem that is expanding and imploding, being everytime closer to different disciplines.

As presented by the Dx5 research group “Graphics, since its beginnings, has been conceived as a complex system, the result of the interaction of its components or agents involved. Today, understanding this system as a whole leads us to the creation of an enriched and more complete meaning of what contemporary graphics represents. We believe that it is in the liminal spaces that emerge at the frontier of the imperceptible that the interesting synergies that characterize the new expanded field graphics are forged. For two decades, the d×5 group, dedicated to research in contemporary graphic art, has inhabited this vast frontier, combining theoretical-conceptual research with artistic-practical and scientific-technical research.”

On the other hand of the project, we have the exhibition Blanco sobre blanco [white on white] a co-curated collective show presented site-specific for the FIG International Print Fair in Bilbao in 2023. For this exhibition, that was taking place along with the presentation of the artist-book, a selection of six artists and researchers, members of the dx5, created a new installation. Working in different disciplines, graphic works where proposed from tridimensional ceramics structures, laser-cutted polyester ethereal hanging installations, tradicional woodcutting engravings, expanded 3D printed paints and acrylic materials and silkscreened post-its subjectives maps. Every artist (Ana Soler, Anne Heyvaert, Almudena Fernández Fariña, Antía Iglesias, Carlos Fer and Jose Andrés Santiago Iglesias) addressed at least one of the five main themes selected as ‘fundamental’ for graphic creation and experimented with it on their own practices.

The result is a collaborative show installed as an unique artwork that occupies the walls, ceilings and floor of the gallery space.
